Dutasteroid tablet (composition)

Description of dutasteroid :n

Dutaheal is a prescription medicine containing dutasteride (0.5 mg), used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland in adult men. It works by blocking the enzyme (5-alpha reductase) that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone responsible for prostate growth, thereby shrinking the enlarged prostate and improving urinary symptoms like weak urine stream, frequent urination, and difficulty in passing urine.

Precautions of dutasteroid :

  • Not for women or children
Dutasteride is strictly for adult men. Women—especially pregnant women—must not handle crushed or broken capsules, as the drug can be absorbed through the skin and may harm a male fetus.

  • Pregnancy warning
If a sexual partner is pregnant or may become pregnant, a condom should be used because dutasteride can be present in semen.

  • Liver problems
Use cautiously in patients with liver disease, as the medicine is metabolized in the liver.

  • Prostate cancer monitoring
Dutasteride lowers PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) levels. Regular PSA monitoring is important, and your doctor should be informed that you are taking dutasteride.

  • Sexual side effects
It may cause decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or reduced semen volume.

  • Allergic reactions
Avoid use if you have a known allergy to dutasteride or other 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (like finasteride).

  • Blood donation restriction
Do not donate blood during treatment and for at least 6 months after stopping the medicine to prevent risk to pregnant women.

It blocks the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Lowering DHT helps shrink the enlarged prostate.

Yes. It lowers PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) levels by about 50%. Always inform your doctor you are taking dutasteride before a PSA test.

8. Can it be taken with other BPH medicines?

Yes, it is often prescribed with alpha-blockers like Tamsulosin for better symptom control.

These medicines can increase dutasteride levels in the blood, raising the risk of side effects:

  • Ketoconazole

  • Ritonavir

  • Clarithromycin

  • Verapamil

  • Diltiazem

2. Other 5-alpha reductase inhibitors

Taking dutasteride with:

  • Finasteride
may increase the risk of side effects without added benefit.
